Homeowners whose carpets have developed strong pet odors frequently feel as if they have no other choice but to have the offending carpets replaced. This is not always the case, however. Even if pet urine has permeated the carpets in many different areas, steam cleaning is often effective in removing odors because the process gets to the root of the problem instead of just attempting to temporarily mask the stench with products containing heavy perfumes and large amounts of chemicals.
Unless the urine and other substances that create odors are thoroughly removed, the smells will continue to return no matter what amount of perfumed products are piled on carpet surfaces. Even worse, pets may continue to use the carpets for urinals because of the existing odor even if the smell was caused by previous pets belonging to prior owners or residents of the home. Pet odors also have a way of making themselves known during the most inopportune times such as when homeowners are entertaining their employers, in-laws or other important guests.
Pet odors also do not fade in time the way that many other types of odors do. In fact, a carpet that has been urinated on frequently by dogs or cars usually smells worse as it ages. Their is good news, however — pet urine odor is relatively easy to remove provided that the right cleaning process is performed. Steam cleaning is an excellent way to achieve this because it takes away the initial source of the smell.
It is not necessary in most cases to replace carpeting that has developed pet urine odors. Proper and thorough steam cleaning will lift pleasant smells completely out of carpet fibers, allowing the household atmosphere to have a clean and refreshing aroma.
